Mat 6:9-13
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
A. Intro:
Thus therefore pray ye
- “He who best knew what we ought to pray for, and how we ought to pray, what matter of desire, what manner of address would most please himself, would best become us, has here dictated to us a most perfect and universal form of prayer, comprehending all our real wants, expressing all our lawful desires; a complete directory and full exercise of all our devotions.” John Wesley
- Most comprehensive prayer given to us by Jesus teaching us the manner in which we are supposed to pray, not the exact words to be used. This contains the substance of our petitions and proper way addressed to God. For example: Matt 26:39-42, Matt 26:44; Luke 22:42; John 17; Act 1:24.
B. Matt 6:9
- Our Father - God is called Father, being a personal declaration.
1. As he is the Creator (from everlasting to everlasting, Supreme) and the Great Parent of all;
2. The Preserver & jealous Protector of the human family and the Provider for their wants, Matt 5:45; Matt 6:32;
3. In a special sense he is the Father of those who are adopted into his family; who put confidence in him; who are the true followers of Christ, and made heirs of life, Rom 8:14-17.
4. General foundation of our prayer, meaning that the relationship has to exist before our prayer avails to anything. Even to point of crying as Jesus and David did at times of deepest distress.
5. Our Father who is to be held with constant honor, deepest love and fear (not frightened).
- Hallowed be thy name
1. Proclamation that there is none like our God whom we are petitioning to.
2. Acknowledgement that there is no other we would recklessly put our complete trust. Is He the only One we would ‘run’ to or the last alternative?
3. The Father alone deserves our full attention and worship. What are the things or persons that stand in the way of God? To whom or what do we ascribe our worship?
C. Matt 6:10
- Thy kingdom come
1. Let the reign of God come to us as we come before our Father in prayer.
2. Desiring that His Supremacy and Scepter of Righteous reign everywhere, including in our personal lives (thoughts, attitudes, various conditions, reactions, privacy, etc)
3. How sovereign is God in our personal lives? Who is the true King of our lives? Or is there another than drives us differently?
4. Proof of God’s ruler-ship of our lives: Rom 14:17 - For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Meat and drink speaks of what the values of the world vs. that which is from God. John 4:34.
- Thy will be done
1. Rom 12:2: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
2. It is a moral decision not to conform to the patterns of this world first, then the renewing of our minds take place to start the first steps in obedience to God. Majority doesn’t mean things are right (the world), men and women who walked in obedience to God has always been the minority.
3. Acknowledge that God’s ways are perfect. Thus our prayer should be in total agreement with His Divine Word.
4. Adam and Eve’s first sin comes with self will, Jesus at Gethsemane submitted totally to God’s will.
D. Matt 6:11
- Give us this day ...
1. Matt 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God
2. The word “bread,” here, denotes doubtless everything necessary to sustain life, beyond the physical. Matt 6:33 – God will certainly take care of our daily needs and even to overflowing.
3. Daily bread is the daily dependency on God for our wants. One day is as important as the other.
4. The ‘us’ would mean the asking for daily sustenance from God is not merely to support us but overflowing to others. To our families, our fellow members of God’s household and the others.
5. John 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of eternal life. – Life or death proceeds from our mouth?
E. Matt 6:12
- And forgive us our debts
1. Why we need to confess our sins? 1Jo 1:8-10: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
• Sin – the nature thereof. Living in truth, not carrying any wrong views of our selves.
• Sins – acts of it.
• The sentences begin with ‘if’, denoting that it’s a decision we have to make.
• We shouldn’t compare, sin is not relative.
2. Matt 18:21-35 – receiving forgiveness for ourselves isn’t enough. Don’t be tormented!
3. We don’t literally owe God, but rather our sins have become resemblance to debts. Because of our sins (breaking of God’s Holy Laws) we are therefore guilty and needing to face the penalty thereof.
4. Psa 18:25-26: With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright; With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
5. The right to receiving forgiveness from the Father only comes with our conscious decision to forgive other.
6. Mic 6:8: He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
7. However – We have to resolve in our hearts not to yield to willfully sin. Danger is that our hearts become false to God and become numb. Psa 66:18.
F. Matt 6:13
- And lead us not into temptation
1. Jam 1:13: Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
2. Jesus was tempted but came out of the 3 main temptations (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life) sinless. He knew a greater drawing of a Heavenly Life Force that sets a constraining power. We, in our sinful nature, need the regeneration to have a life in the higher plane of spirituality that has the same constraining power.
3. “Satan does not tempt us to do wrong things; he tempts us in order to make us lose what God has put into us by regeneration” – Oswald Chambers
4. Psa 141:4: Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties. – Oh that God wean us to spiritual maturity when sins become tasteless and things precious to God becomes our eternal pursuit.
- Deliver us from evil (one)
1. 1Jo 2:13: I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
2. ‘Known’ is an absolute resolution in our heart (to know, and know in the inner most) what the Father desires of us. This deep perception brings us to a place of preciousness that we don’t want to grief Father.
3. This ‘knowing’ of the Heavenly Father places us in a place of authority over the evil one (the other ‘parent’ – John 8:44).
4. Practically we are to ask God to protect us against the following (Deut 28)
- The evil one (source of evil)
- Evil doers who seek to do harm (workers of evil)
- Accidents (situations of evil)
- Sicknesses
- Conclusion of our prayer
We start our prayer by acknowledging and worshiping our Heavenly Father, we end our prayer likewise.
Thine is the kingdom - That is, God is the reigning Power over all. He has also the right over our lives, but it’s a matter of how much a place of authority we give Him.
Thine is the power – Know that we are weak and in Christ we are made more than conquerors. Recognize the omnipotence of God, His executive Power over all other earthly powers.
Thine is the glory – Worship (or worth given to God) is the expression of the deepest part of our inner being that springs forth as a fountain. This is a place of intimacy that only we are willing to share with no other except with the Lover of our soul. In His Glory, everything else incomparable to His is surpassing Greatness. Phil 2:10, 11.
Amen - Hebrew verb signifying “to be firm, secure, to be true and faithful.” It is a word expressing consent or strong approval. “So be it!” full stop.
